Thank you for your post.
While both Bentonite and ESS-13 are natural products, there are distinct differences which makes ESS-13 a more effective choice when looking to construct or repair a pond.
Bentonite is a clay formed by the decomposition of volcanic ash, having the ability to absorb large quantities of water and to expand to several times its normal volume.
ESS-13 is a liquid emulsified polymer that alters the molecular behavior of soil particles. ESS-13 actually causes changes in the behavior of soil by causing soil particles to align so that fewer gaps or spaces exist between the particles. The vegetable oil in ESS-13 works to seal (or plug) the minute gaps that remain. This creates a permanent seal within the pond that actually continues to improve over time as the natural siltation process occurs. A more thorough explanation can be found on our web site. I have included a link for your convenience (

Bentonite is indeed an effective product to use in certain situations; and has been used for many years. Bentonite however, is a one shot approach in that it is only effective if placed in the exact location at the correct concentrations. Once Bentonite is exposed to water, it will expand. If allowed to dry, it becomes ineffective.
ESS-13 can be used in full ponds because you do not need to know exactly where the seepage is occurring. Our product is simply poured into the water (based on prescribed applications rates) where it will migrate throughout the entire pond and be drawn into voids in the soil. As it is drawn in, seepage rapidly begins to decrease. Typically, within 8-12 hours of applying ESS-13 the entire body of water will turn white, within 72 hours the majority of the product will have been drawn into the soil and a noticeable decrease in water loss can be measured. We typically see reductions between 60% - 90% with the use of ESS-13.
When ESS-13 is used in a dry application, a Seepage Control representative is on-site during the entire installation process to ensure the lining system is properly installed. This technical support is provided at no additional cost and enables Seepage Control to guarantee the results. By working directly with the contractor, owner and engineers, Seepage Control is able to ensure the end results meet or exceed all expectations.
Please let me know if you have additional questions or a specific project you are working on. We would be happy to provide detailed information on ESS-13 and how we can help you!
